Belated crosspost from my devFART journal:

Considering trying to produce a book about my creatures and places, a la those "Wildlife of Star Wars" type books, partly because a) I like designing creatures and places and goodness knows I've got enough of them, b) I'm bored and it's the sort of thing a fit of boredom triggers and c) I can.

Obviously I'd have to self-publish (for now, anyway, and probably "for then" as well, meh), it'd probably take FOREVER, and I have no idea if ANYONE would buy it, but anyway. Thought I'd throw the idea into the ring anyway.

Good, bad, what?

Edit: If you've not seen the "Wildlife of Star Wars" book in question, there's an Amazon "look inside" page here (it should work, a friend on a different PC tested it last night):
Look inside "Wildlife of Star Wars"
(Takes a while to load if you're on dialup.)
Essentially, I was going to try and aim for the whole "naturalists notebook" type thing, but not just with wildlife but with the people too. As in, a preliminary chapter about the universe, then a section on each planet (as in, a section on Ondra the world, the Ondrai themselves, the basics of the ecosystem, then the flora and the fauna (eg Mophia, Podicea, etc), and then the transients and travellers etc. I mean, lets face it, I have as much fun designing my sprawling galaxy as I do writing fiction going on in it, so... it might be fun, and it could be a companion to it. Even if nobody wants to buy it. *pouty sadface* ( ;) )

Hmm.... depends how many foxes it has.

Assuming you haven't killed me, I probably would be interested in one, provided the story was actually out. That's really the sort of thing that shouldn't be sold while the story is still being transcribed.

Part of the idea is to get all this across within the story itself, as well. Which means such a book would be a great in/external reference for yourself while writing it. But I think it would be really difficult selling an encyclopedia of fictional creatures for a story that still doesn't exist.

Notes and random chapters on the web don't count. Not in terms of marketing, anyway.

Ohh, lots of foxes, just not fox-shaped ones. ;)

I know what you're saying, but y'know, I've always had a thing about concept art and alien creatures - I mean, I don't care beans about Star Wars, but "the Wildlife of Star Wars" makes me go all asquee because it's concept art. I may have lost almost all interest in Oddworld, but "the Art of Oddworld" is packed full of conceptual drawings and I still enjoy looking at it. Almost all my favourite artists do concept work of their own, species and designs for worlds and things, and I think I'd buy a book by them purely because of that (although I draw the line at "OMG liek here is my mystical noble penguiffon character that's so noble and mystical and honourable and DOES KUNG FU and just happens to talk and behave and dress and shag like any other randy, emo, raver-goth American teen BY COMPLETE COINCIDENCE, yaknow?")

Granted, I'm trying to get it across "in the story itself" (you may have noticed I get wordy. ;) ) but I like to CREATE things as well as write fiction about them. And when you think about it, I have... at most about 20 people on my LJ friends list? And only you or Steelwing ever seem to reply, 90% of the time (like on devART, it's either you, Adder or Anna reply and that's about it). Soo who's going to BUY it? But then, my art is more for the fun of creating it and less for the financial gain, and if only one or two people like it, well, I could do worse. :)

So I think I'd write and illustrate it just for the fun of creating it. ;)

I'm more concerned as it either being A) An effort in vain that is never finished or never sold, if not both, or B) becoming a major impediment to the actual progress of work on your story itself.

It might be easier just to keep track of all your notes and odd diagrams, keep them semi-sorted, and when the story's actually done, re-claim them, touch them up, and recast them in a presentable form.

Since what you'd be showing us is how/what you used to make the story, the diagrams and details, it might be easier to try and assemble the parts of it as you go. Rather than just make it one large project for now.

Besides, I think I see Danji or so reply from time to time. Who've I actually met in person, oddly enough - but not on the internet, so figure that one out...
