As I've been told I "criticise things too much", I have come to the conclusion that offering ANY advice is wasted, and that when people ask for "constructive criticism" all they EVER mean (with a few tiny exceptions) is "omg tell me how great I am."

So I'm giving up bothering expending my energy, I won't say anything other than "that's nice". And in response, if you don't like my art, if you don't like the writings I pour my heart and soul into, that's your prerogative, but I'm not changing any of it.

See, this is why you should always make sure the people are actualy intelegent enough to know what asking for critique means. If you're sure they know, but they still can't take it (as in, go "OMG! Ur so mean!" afterwards) it is safe to re-evaluate your view of them.

If they take the criticism but do nothing about it... well, at least they took it.

Heh, yeah, I guess. I think I was caught out of the blue by being told "yeah but you criticise my ideas too much" and I was stood going "...but I've only seen ONE of your ideas, and the only real criticism I recall making of it was that it wasn't the kind of thing *I*'d do, after having said I liked his ideas and wanted to read more of them!"

The fact that it was coming from someone who often tells me he'd rather I did something completely different with MY works (after never having actually READ anything other than a few little snippets of it), and more in line with his ideas, was the icing on the cake. I felt like stamping my foot a bit.

o.O I must've missed something.

This is why DeviantArt tried to enforce that little feature you can change so you either say you don't want crits or have advanced crits. I understand how fragile the ego of a budding artist or writer is (we were all there at one point) but I've learned that crits are not there to kick you down but to make you better. (I'm such a perfectionist with my work, if someone makes a crit of an already finished piece I'll just stare at the flaw until I just can't take it anymore and change it.)

And just so you know, I DO read your works. When I can concentrate. I need a printer for this computer, for some reason it's infinatly more easy to concentrate on printed word than words on a computer screen. I've been meaning to say this, but Iios reminds me of a character that has never seen the light of day lately, at least not the light of the Internet. Smarminess is so much fun to write, though!

Eh, you didn't miss anything - it's just overspill from someone else's journal. ;) I apologise for catching other people in it. Fair points, though - and I know all about the perfectionism, I won't normally upload anything unless I'm absolutely 100% happy with it (same with the writing).

I by far prefer the printed word over a computer screen, too, but I can't store everything I would ordinarily have printed any more. :(

Jeesh! This sure opens up a can of worms... but I honestly don't have the energy to debate it right now, especially since I'm not sure where to start or what to say to make both of us feel better. :/

*spreads hands* I was feeling especially frustrated, when I posted this - particularly since it's seemed lately like you've been managing to fixate on the smallest negative thing I say in any particular post, and expand it so it was the sole subject of the conversation. :P That the fact that you're often grumbling that my writings , usually saying I should "make more gentle, loving beings people can be sympathetic towards" (which incidentally is Ivy, 100%), then have the audacity to say I'm only ever critical about your own creations, when you've not showed me more than a few chapters, and I can't recall really saying ANYTHING negative (outside of the fact that it's not the sort of thing *I*'d personally write), and repeatedly saying I'd like to read more of it! But THAT apparently doesn't count. Your way of percieving my characters seems to be like you're seeing a photograph of a circus tiger being kittenish with a trainer, and concluding based on that alone a tiger makes a great pet.

Argh, now I look all ranty and stupidly emo, and I'm not. (That and right this second, I feel like I'm watching something like someone screaming "OMG YOU COPIED MY CHARACTOR GREEK HUSKIES ARE COPYRITE MEEE ©©©!!!eleventy1!" and it's annoying me.) I'm just... frustrated. I'm not going to demand that anyone reads anything I write, or look at any pictures, or anything, because frankly I really don't care that much any more. (If people want to read it, it's their prerogative, but I'm not going to scream about it.)

Argh.

I've already apologized for the poor actions on my part, but I'm also still sorry that you feel this way in general.

Eh. The world could use a critic.

And yes, I understand the context. I just can't think of anything constructive to say on it.
