Random little irritance that I've seen again.

Why do people (and furries in particular) always ALWAYS say weird/just-plain-stupid things like "I'm a female vixen!" or "I'm part fox and part vixen!" That's like saying "hey I'm female lioness" or "wow I'm part horse and part horse!". Well, really?! *beats head on desk*

You might as well ask why any redundancies exist in languages, although technically, such a thing as a male vixen might be excusable; i.e. a person who's technically male but thinks of themself as a female fox (these are furries we're talking about, after all...)

These people also type their PIN number into the ATM machine, and go to bed at 11pm at night.

It bugs me, too - I feel your pain.

I've seen it a lot. :\ And thinking about it, I HAVE seen someone refer to a "female lioness". *twitch*

DON'T CONFUSE THE ISSUE, YOU... YOU MALE MALE, YOU!

And I must disagree on the "excusability" factor, a "male vixen" would be just plain silly. :P If they thought of themself as female they'd be a vixen, irrespective of physical gender.

But then furry is basically fucked six ways since saturday (in all its potential meanings), so... I guess it boils down to "who damn cares?" ;)

:D They had something about that in New Scientist. Apparently, one council (or something) sent people letters detailing their "personal PIN number" once - the magazine said they'd be interested to hear from the first person to get a "personal identification PIN number".

I'll admit when I was a little girl I thought vixen and fox were two different animals. Well, I can blame Disney for that one: in their animated film 'Robin Hood' they labeled Robin Hood as a Fox and Lady Marin as a Vixen.

Damn Disney for confusing the minds of kids like me!

Oh, sure, as a KID I can understand it, even *I* didn't know what a vixen was when I was about 3 or 4 (since I remember asking, when I was watching it at my grandparents, waaay back in the early 80s. Odd, what sticks in your mind.)

For a FURRY with a FOX alter-ego to talk about "sexy female vixens" just makes me go buh-what? :P

I think I was a bit older then that when I first saw it and I didn't find out the 'truth' until much later to be honest.

Either way I agree with you on the 'wtf' bit.

You, apparently, since you posted in your journal about it. And come to think of it, I've not seen non-furries (unless you count therians as separate) call themselves female vixens. Though I can't possibly figure out why...

So now I'm a double-male...

To risk pouring oil on a fire, so to speak, this reminds me of a book...
Armed Gunmen, True Facts, and Ridiculous Nonsense (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0375423524/103-4775665-4852659?v=glance)

Should be enough redundancies in there to easily drive you mad.

Well, I imagine it will surprising when somebody posts, "Hi, I'm a male vixen." When life hands you absurdity, make lemonade.

Seriously, though, it looks like they just want to put a healthy modifier in there. Just "I'm a vixen" isn't satisfying. I think they're right: it isn't. By such descriptions, the best way to introduce, say, Mickey Rooney would be, "He's a male human!" That doesn't quite do Rooney justice, does it? Personally, I like to introduce myself with a name. Come to think of it, I've never done it any other way!

Speaking of introductions, don't be concerned with me: I was just browsing my friends-of-friends list while I should be doing something more worthwhile.

"Just "I'm a vixen" isn't satisfying"
- perhaps not, but they could pick a better modifier than "female". :P As that makes it "Hey guys, I'm a female female fox!" (Reminds me of some of the "double females" featured on VCL Horrors *shudder*) To go by your description, Mickey Rooney would be "He's a male man." I see the point, I just think it really sums up the midset of certain fandoms... ;) To be honest it was the way a lot of furries seem to class "vixen" as a whole different species to just "female fox" (like Sl'askia mentioned earlier) which irks me.

"I was just browsing my friends-of-friends list while I should be doing something more worthwhile."
I do that. ;)

"You, apparently, since you posted in your journal about it. And come to think of it, I've not seen non-furries (unless you count therians as separate) call themselves female vixens."
- I meant "use the term" rather than call themselves it, per se. And since when have rants got to be earth-shattering? (Excuse= it was late and I was pissed off that my flatmate had nicked ALL the hot water AGAIN (2 nights running, chrissake!) before I got the chance to have my own shower.)

I'm going to be late for work at this rate. :P
