I think it's a Suffolk thing - I'd heard of cockchafers before moving here but never encountered the little darlings until being bombarded by them while walking the dog one night. We called them "those horrible bee-moth-things" for ages because we didn't know what they were, and I finally worked out what they were at Uni, after finding one guess what, flailing around on its back in the kitchen one spring. :P I think they call them "midgimadors" or "bombadors" as well as may-bugs here, but my colleagues call them "billywitches" and it's stuck. ;)
