Hm.... On that note. First, as long as metaphors are being used, it's possible to pinpoint what one likes about chocolate because there are many different styles...
So, if we try some examples - Namely, would it be the same if there was a robot that was state-of-the-art-tech, fully mechanical, with a digitized brain, but the mind and consciousness of a human or some other such organic being? What about a fully organic body that was overwritten with a high-grade AI? Does the scope, capabilities, or self-awareness of any such AI factor in? Is it not the same if there isn't an AI at all, rather, an android by remote control so to speak? What if there was no circuitry, electricity, no mechanized parts or joints, no microchips or processors in it at all, but still a fully artificially created body and consciousness that was still inorganic - And yes, that is possible, in theory at least. Or fantasy - take your pick.
What I'm more curious to, rather, is where you feel they exist in terms of individuality. Is a servant AI in a workbot still count as an AI, as an individual, even if it limited to direct programming and has no learning or self-awareness? Would it's programming count as personality? If a robot is incapable of self-change, does it still count as cognizant? And to what extend should an artificially induced mind differ from a grown organic one? Would a self-aware AI always consider itself above tradition organisms? Would it be possible for an inferiority complex to develop as well?
The second set's a bit off from the original queries, yes. But I'm still quite curious, and I'm sure you have opinions on at least some of this...
