Well, these days I noticed that if you have a birdish head and a quadruped body, it gets dubbed "griffin" no matter what it is. (Although I agree, classical Greek griffins were a lot more elegant.) Especially if you ask a furry. :P
Effectively, this is like a "form" of the esu'vei, one of the two "phoenices" thought to guards Ii, the Kiravai deity. I'm not going to ever say if it actually IS, but it used to be thought in the Kiravai mythos that the two esu occasionally protected mortals that were deemed worthy. Of course, the esu'vei is like a roughly 15-foot-tall walking ball of flame, so (she) has to take on another form to blend in with society. ;)
